The bohemian district of Colonia Roma is one of Mexico City’s most vibrant residential areas. Known for its culture, architecture and bustling nightlife, Colonia Roma has become a popular destination for younger, upscale urban types. And Hotel Brick, a posh 17-room boutique hotel, graces the centre of this historic area, surrounded by galleries, shops and coffeehouses.

Hotel Brick

Jetsetter review

The chic Hotel Brick puts a boutique twist on trendy Colonia Roma. Originally an enclave for the wealthy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this colonia (district) now showcases exquisite historic French-style mansions that have been deemed cultural heritage sites by the National Institute of Fine Arts.

More recently, the area has developed a bohemian vibe attracting a younger generation of artists, writers and urban hipsters. Hotel Brick keeps that vibe, with its modern architecture and swanky interiors.

The lower-level Loncheria Olivia bakery serves much-loved pastries, fresh bread and pizza.
Each of the 17 suites has complimentary WiFi, a French bath, Kiehl’s amenities and balcony views overlooking the pool or out onto the charming streets. The penthouse loft offers its own spacious garden terrace with incredible views of the city. Guestrooms have a streamlined look, with one wood-lined wall offset by stark whites and mirrors.

There are two on-site restaurants. Brasserie La Moderna serves traditional Provençal cuisine prepared by renowned chef Richard Sandoval, and Loncheria Olivia bakery is popular for its fresh woodstove-baked bread and pastries, and delicious pizza and sandwich selections.

Come the weekend, the hotel is transformed into a vibrant nightlife spot. An upscale crowd takes over the fashionable lobby bar and terrace area with parties that last long into the night. The it place for those seeking to be part of the social scene in Colonia Roma, Hotel Brick is convenient for exploring the city, but it’s also a see-and-be-seen destination in itself.

What to do

  • A Royal Tour. Perched on a hilltop in the centre of Chapultepec Park, the Chapultepec Castle was originally a sacred place for the Aztecs. But you might recognise the castle from the 1996 movie adaptation of Romeo and Juliet starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.
  • Amuse Yourself. The Museo de Arte Moderno (Museum of Modern Art) features a large collection of works by the great Mexican artists of the 20th century.
  • Walk the Steets. Hotel Brick is on Orizaba Street, home to the Temple of the Sacred Family, a beautifully designed structure built in the early 20th century. Nearby is Rio de Janeiro Plaza, displaying one of only two bronze replicas of Michelangelo’s David.
  • Try a New Avenue. Stroll the streets of Mexico City along Reforma Avenue. The 7.5-mile boulevard hosts numerous plazas, hotels, restaurants, art galleries and historic landmarks, including the fountain of Diana, with the goddess hunting the stars of the northern skies with her bow.
  • Climb to the Top. Teotihuacan, known for its monumental structures, is one of the most fascinating sites in Mexico City. Here, visitors are able to make an incredible climb to the top of the Sun, Moon and Feathered pyramids, set along the main street of Teotihuacan, the Avenue of the Dead.

  • What I liked

The penthouse suite was fantastic! By far the most interesting hotel room I have ever stayed in. The common areas were beautiful. All in all a beautiful hotel that everyone should experience.

    What I disliked

Some of the staff at the front desk had major attitude. The guy who checked us in barely acknowledged our existence. It wasn't until I called him on his attitude that he finally started acting like a professional.

  • What I liked

Staff was very cordial. Wireless was great. Location was good. Bar was a fun area.

    What I disliked

We checked in at 3 but had to wait an hour to get our room; they gave us a free drink, but it seemed crazy to have to wait. We left the hotel one day at 9 and returned at 430 and they were just cleaning our room, which was a drag. Breakfast was a roll, a cup of coffee (regular) and an oj and it cost $22/person which was silly.

Everything! A gem. Great room with a balcony overlooking Tabasco St., excellent beds and linens (very important!), fantastic design throughout, terrific staff. Can't say enough good things. Would give it the highest recommendation to anyone looking for more of a boutique experience in Mexico City.

  • What I liked

I have been traveling to Mexico City for 15 years, and this was the best hotel I have ever stayed at. Small, safe, comfortable, great service, and something you never get in Mexico City - lightening fast internet.

    What I disliked

It rained and I wasn't able to enjoy the outdoor terrace.
